Day 23: Downtime in Long Beach

Wed 9/30 @ 4:38 PM

So I’m sitting here finally catching up on this blog in a bar in Long Beach, California, one of Jetblue’s two big hubs.  ”Big” as in “number-of-connections-though”, to be clear; unlike Jetblue’s other big hub, JFK, no one would describe LGB as a big airport.

JFK’s T5 has like nine times as many gates just dedicated to its airline as LGB has altogether.

So while I was a little underwhelmed by the notion of whiling away six hours in T5 a week ago, today’s six-hour layover in LGB was looking downright terrifying.  I pretty much decided before I landed that I wouldn’t be hanging out in the airport for that whole time just to avoid a security re-check.

But LGB’s not really right next to anything.  I did some googling and weighed my options: I could have grabbed a cab or even a bus to somewhere in the area and made an excursion of my time, but that didn’t really appeal to me, so I did what I normally do instead: found something to walk to, and walked to it.

And so it was a mile north on Lakeshore Blvd., past the airport and some helipads and construction projects on my left, BOEING with it’s grand old “Fly DC” sign on my right, to a chinese restaurant that chowhound approved of for some honey walnut shrimp that was honestly just about the kickassest honey walnut shrimp I’ve ever had.

But what L.V. Chinese Restaurant didn’t have handy was a power outlet, so I moved on to a bar I saw one the way to the restaurant.  Popped inside, ordered a beer, scoped for outlets, and here I am.

And what a beer it is:

They call it a “schooner”, and declare it to be a round 34 oz.  Which is an odd measurement for a beer, but not so odd for a bier: 34 oz is just about exactly one liter, and a liter of beer is pretty much what you drink if you’re in Bavaria, if, for example, you’re in Munich for Oktoberfest.

I didn’t know I was ending up with a liter of beer when I ordered the Oktoberfest, but between the size and the name and the fact that I’m sitting on a wooden picnic table, I’m just about ready to hear an accordion kick in and for the guys speaking Spanish at the pool table next to me to break into a rousing chorus of Ein Prosit.

San Francisco was fun; Salt Lake City will hopefully be fun as well, though I suspect it will be a much quieter and in its way weird experience, since there’s not much mefi representation in the area.

Will I find anything fascinating in SLC in my day of wandering?  Will the wholesomeness kill me dead?  Will my experiences there top the time years ago when I was on a bus layover in the city for a couple hours and was an attempted de-convert courtesy of a homeless kid who apparently thought I was a little too Mormon for my own good?

We’ll see!

Fantastic meetup in San Francisco, at least a couple dozen folks came out to the Zeitgeist, a nice biker-friendly bar in the Mission with a great big outdoor back area where we glommed onto a few picnic tables and drank and talked and eventually played Apples to Apples.
Check out the Zeitgeistery here.

Anchor Brewing’s “Old Foghorn” barleywine beer.  Very tasty.
I hit up Anchor’s brewery tour with mefites rtha (who along with gingerbeer was hosting me in SF) and QuietGal.  Nice tour, has me feeling like I should hit up more local brewery tours in Portland now.  Tourguide was a nice guy, good story teller, and looked oddly like the main character from Office Space, though I erred on the side of caution as far as broaching that goes.
Fun fact: show me a bottling line and I will have the theme to Laverne & Shirley stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
After the tour came the tasting, and they weren’t shy about pouring full glasses, so by one o’clock we were in pretty good shape.  After that, we had a nice wander down 24th and then Valencia.
San Francisco is another item on my increasingly long list of places to return to.  It’s also probably the first one that I’ve seriously thought “I could live here” about, though that’s pretty academic since I could live in Portland even more and already do, to boot.
I have had a lot of beer on this trip; I regret now not documenting it a bit more (mefite ambient2 asked at last night’s meetup whether I had been tallying pints, and I wish I could have said “yes”), though usually the light isn’t this good.

First night in San Fran, got together with a half-dozen other folks (including ooga_booga, pictured) for some drinking and chatting.  The light was very red, needless to say.

Day 20: Hollywood Restaurant Fail

Sun 9/27 @ 5:15 PM

After an epic driving tour of some of LA yesterday (La Brea tarpits, check; Ameoba records, check; Griffith Park observatory, check; a whole lot of crappy traffic, check), and some serious food and drink and conversation at Carson’s place last night, I crawled into consciousness this morning and hitched a ride into Beverly Hills to see the local library branch.

Plan to wander 90210 from there switched over to seeing a flick with mefites Ambrosia Voyeur and contraption: Surrogates, a decidedly crappy film, at the Arclight, a decidedly nice theater.

That accomplished, I got dropped off at Hollywood and Highland Park to soak in a quick dose of pure Hollywood Tourism.  In Portland, when you see a Michael Jackson wandering around, you know that guy really means it; in Hollywood, it feels kind of rote after you see the third one on the same block.

So: food!  I had some tasty chorizo eggs and bacon for breakfast at Carson’s, but that was a while ago.  I hit up the internet to see what I could do that was better than mall food court food, settled on a place a few blocks away called Uzbekistan, and got my walk on.

It wasn’t till I hit 7707 Sunset that I stopped to make sure something wasn’t wrong.  7707 was there, just like I was expecting it to be, but it was (a) shuttered and (b) didn’t look much like a shuttered restaurant.

Okay, google again: Uzbekistan was back at 7077.  Ah.  I’m not walking six blocks back the way I came — I’m only gonna see a little bit of LA this afternoon on foot, so I’d rather it not be the same six blocks twice if I can help it — so I google for other options.

Option one: All American Burger, which is about a block behind me.  And closed.

Option two: The Griddle Cafe, a couple blocks ahead.  And: closed.

So here I sit in a (presumably recently) Grandly Opened japanese joint on Hayworth called Sansai, eating some yakisoba and feeling pretty okay about that.

Vindication: googling a bit more reveals that Uzbekistan is actually closed, too.  Heh.

Steve and Amber, two of the many mefites who showed up for the meetup.  I didn’t get many pictures (too busy playing Rockband and socializing and, well, okay, playing Rockband) but what there is you can see right here.

Florentine Benedict.  I had six kinds of benedict to choose from, and I chose this one, and I was pretty okay with that.
Between the benedict and a bunch of blueberry muffins and some mimosas and a bunch of coffee, I wasn’t really read to eat again until about 8pm.  We had tasty buffet barbecue at Carson’s place for the meetup, corn and meat and produce kebabs, local popsicles, and lots and lots of beer.
Not sure what I’l eat today, but by all reports I’ve got a lot of choices available to me.

Klangklangston, being lit up for reasons I can no longer recall.  If there was some way to play Halo 3 on an iPhone, this would have been even more thematically rich.
First-night meetup at The Daily Pint was a lot of fun.  And the scotch list there, wow.
This morning, we’ll commence crawling around LA in a multi-car caravan with walkie talkies.
All the meetup photos from last night, right here.  Click away!

What can I say, I’m twelve years old.  Fun afternoon and evening in LA county; meetup pics coming tomorrow, but for now I need to collapse.

Day 18: Interlude, part 2.
Going home in the middle makes this whole thing a little bit easier to manage, but it also means leaving again which might just about cancel that out.
But now it’s off to LGB and further.  And we just started boarding, so I’d better get on that plane.
