Day 6: The Drive to Vermont

Sun 9/13 @ 2:59 PM

Sitting in my fellow Metafilter moderator Jessamyn’s apartment while we each dork around on our respective computers and listen to random electronica she got from another mefite, googly.  Getting in some solid nerding after several hours of driving.

Several hours of riding, really, on my part.  I’d have considered engineering more driving segments into this whole thing, but I have no license and feel like a total sponge about what driving-me-around others will have to do as it is.

We got breakfast/lunch in Portland at a decent Mexican place with a terrible name that I can’t recall offhand but had the word “Loco” in it and a cartoon of someone wearing a sombrero.  Mexican food is not, according to Jessamyn, something that New England does very well, but that place is for all that still yards better than anything near Randolph, VT.

Drive was beautiful, with the sheets of rain yesterday on the way up from Salem nowhere to be seen.  I love PDX, and it’s got some pretty good territory around it, but New England does have some damned pretty stuff of it’s own going on and the shift in scenery is nice.

We stopped at mefites terrapin & turtlegirl’s place to meet their llamas and sheep and chickens and pugs, and sat around drinking beer and being just kind of there, which was great.  It’s pretty stupid how nice their view is.  I grabbed an improvised interview with terrapin, possibly the first in a series of short mefite interviews that I hope to edit down into something watchable once the trip is over and I again have access to a beefier computer than my Macbook Air.

Tonight: the drive-in, to see District 9.  We haven’t had an operating drive-in in Portland in years, since the Foster Road Drive-In shut down, so this is like a trip back to high school for me.  It might rain, and that’s totally okay.  Possibly even better.
